Sunshine Community Services Center entered a collaborative effort with Literacy Volunteers of Illinois (LVI) and Black Hawk Community Education Center in February of 2014 to provide tutoring and future services or programs to our Step Ladder students, GED at students, juveniles at the Illinois Youth Center, and families in the community. The former juvenile facility is in a period of transition, but AmeriCorps members are helping in the community.
If our teen youth volunteers continue to tutor, at the age of 17 with parental permission or at the age of 18 they can apply for an AmeriCorps member position. This will not only provide them with future employment, but also the opportunity to earn money for college tuition. Other volunteers can also participate in the AmeriCorps program, earn money for college courses, or have the funds distributed to their child or relative.
LVI covers the living allowance of the AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps members will participate in a variety to trainings, local, state and national events, and meet volunteers of all ages serving in their communities.
Sunshine Community Services Center coordinated a "Summer of Service" AmeriCorps Project for Literacy Volunteers of Illinois. Members tutored for the Step Ladder Tutoring Program, but also volunteered in the schools and various nonprofits organizations in Kewanee. They did an awesome job. Look at additional pictures below.
